Introduction
The Center for Biodiversity and Conservation (part of the American Museum of Natural
History) has a list of different resources for sustaining biodiversity and conservation.
Before you continue, visit the CBC’s What You Can Do page (opens window).
As you saw, one of the most important things you can do is to recognize your own carbon
footprint – a measure of your personal CO2 output based upon your lifestyle. How much
carbon dioxide do you produce each year? Is that a lot? Moreover, if everyone lived a
lifestyle just like yours, would that make things better or worse?
These are questions that many people rarely (if ever) consider, yet they are play a critical
role in addressing climate change and protecting biodiversity.
Assignment
Visit the Environmental Protection Agency’s (opens new window) website to calculate
your carbon footprint. You will be asked a number of questions based upon your lifestyle.
When you complete this activity:
1. Copy and paste the full results into the lab document.
2. In paragraph form, compare the analysis what you are actually doing in your home.
Which of your activities produce the most CO2? The least?
Revised Spring 2021
3. Regardless of the choices of others, the only carbon footprint you have complete
control over is your own. In paragraph form, list at least five things you can do to
reduce your carbon footprint, and discuss which one(s) you are most likely to do.
Before you submit, I recommend that you visit this assignment’s rubric to see how you
will be graded.
One more thing – the EPA is staffed primarily by scientists and engineers. However, since
its Administrator (head) is appointed by the President and approved by Congress, its
priorities may vary with each administration. If you would like to verify your carbon
footprint independently, visit any of these Carbon Footprint Calculators:

Introduction
As suggested in Chapter 20 of our textbook, humans depend on other species for survival. Plants
provide us with oxygen, animals provide us with food, and microbes provide us oxygen, aid in
digestion and even help break down waste. Essentially, humans need biodiversity to survive.
Biodiversity is variety of life on earth.
However, humans are also to blame for a lot of the loss of biodiversity. One of the ways we can
measure biodiversity is to look at species that are on the risk of extinction, ones that are
considered threatened.
The purpose of this lab is to introduce you to some references for endangered species and help
you learn some ways in which you can aid in preventing extinction.
Assignment
You need to become familiar with what endangered species are. To do so, please check out the
information on the websites listed below. Then use these websites to aid you in answering the
questions.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (opens new window) Information on Endangered and

Threatened Species

Revised Spring 2021
Questions
1. What is the difference between extinction and endangered species?
2. Where geographically are most endangered species found in the United States? (Please
list the top 2 states). Hint: you can use the Fish and Wildlife website to answer this
question. Under “Find Endangered Species”, click “more species searches”. From the
ECOS list, click “Listed US Species Occurrence By State”.
3. What are some of the endangered species found in North Carolina that you are familiar
with?
4. Which species surprised you by being endangered in our state?
#5-6. In the US Fish and Wildlife website, click “more species searches”. In the resulting list,
click “Listed Species Summary (Boxscore)”, then answer the questions below.
5. Which animal group is the most threatened and endangered in the US?
6. Which animal group is the most threatened and endangered in the world?
7. Although plant groups are not shown on this list, their totals are. Which has more
endangered species in the world: animals or plants?
8. According to your textbook, what are some of the causes of endangerment to these
species?
9. Choose your favorite animal or plant (be specific – “polar bear” is better than “bear”).
Visit the IUCN’s Redlist (opens new window) of endangered species, and search for
your favorite species. What is its conservation status? (i.e., Not Evaluated, Data
Deficient, Least Concern, Near Threatened, Vulnerable, Endangered, Critically
Endangered, Extinct in the Wild, Extinct).
10. When was it last assessed? What was the scope of the assessment (in other words, in
which location(s) were populations counted)?
