Discussion Points:
1. What were the most frequent behaviors you observed for this animal?
Scratching the floor, which seem to be usual for rabbits.
2. Why you think the animal behaved in this way? Was there an obvious stimulus for
any of the behaviours observed? Was there a change in behaviour over time?
The movement of strange people around the animal triggered the rabbits floors scratching
behavior. The behavior changed when attended by the usual attendant.
3. Do you think the behaviors observed were instinctive or learned? Is there any
evidence for the mechanism(s) by which these animals learn new behaviors e.g. social
learning, conditioning?
The rabbits floor scratching behavior is learned from parents (Innate). The behavior is
similar to that of dogs when approached by strangers. Some studies connect the behavior
to mechanism’s animals develop after bonding with familiar individuals
4. How do you think this behaviour would help the animal to survive in the wild?
Rabbits display wildness when they scratch the floor and the behavior protects them by
pushing away strangers.
While observing, note the time each behavior occurs, how long it continues for,
whether an external stimulus appears to prompt the behavior, and as many details as
you can about the behavior. Use the ethogram template to record what is happening
with each animal at each time point. Take at least one picture or short video to include.
Also write down any questions that occur to you about how or why the animal is doing
what it is doing. Make sure to distinguish what you observed from any speculations you
record about your observation, such as why you think the animal might be behaving in
the way you have observed. After you finish the observation, describe what you saw in
a paragraph.
Answer the following questions about your observation:
5. What has changed over the course of your observations? What may have
prompted those changes?
6.
Pick a behavior that you observed multiple times in this observation. What
differed among the times you observed it? What always stayed the same?
7.
(If you have done observations on two different species) What was most
notable about the behavioral differences between the species you observed?
What was suprisingly similar?
(If you observed the same species for all four observations) Was one observation
distinctly different from the others? If so, what made it feel different?
8. Did you observe any behaviors today that you had not observed previously? If
so, describe it in detail, and explain the likely adaptive benefit of it. If not, do this
for any behavior you saw that you have not discussed in detail before.
