PHYS 122: Homework 9 (long ? 30 marks)
Unit 8: Sound Waves and Unit 9: Light rays at Interfaces
This worksheet file can be printed for your solution work. Numerical values are NOT
randomized, refer to Moodle for answers. For sound waves, if a temperature is not given
assume 343 m/s.
1. [3] A car drives toward a large cliff ahead. The car?s engine emits a steady whining
sound, which travels forward and reflects back off the cliff ahead.
a) Will the frequency of reflected sound heard by the driver be higher or lower than
the sound emitted by the engine? Explain (a diagram may be useful).
b) Does the car act as a moving source or a moving observer (or both, neither)?
Explain.
2. [2] When hiking on a cold day, T = -10.0 ?C, your dog let outs a howl and you hear an
echo of the howl off of a nearby mountain range. If the time delay between when you
hear the howl and the echo is 3.00 s, calculate how far away the mountain range is.
3. [6] Zoe is riding in a basket attached to a stationary air balloon. Hanging by a cord, 50.0
m below Zoe, is a small sound source that operates at a frequency of 2.00 kHz with a
total sound power output of 5.00 mW.
a) What is the intensity level of the sound (in dB) as heard by Zoe?
b) Zoe gets tired of the annoying sound and cuts the cord. How far
away is the source when the intensity level has decreased by 7.0 dB?
c) The sound source drops toward the Earth and soon achieves a terminal speed of
120 m/s. What frequency does Zoe hear now?
d) Zoe jumps out of the basket, opens a parachute and descends at a speed of 50.0 m/s.
What frequency does Zoe hear now? Assume the source is still falling.
4. [7] A 1.8 m long organ pipe is open at one end (and closed at the other).
a. Calculate the fundamental frequency of the pipe.
b. Sketch the wave pattern of nodes and anti-nodes of the third harmonic in the pipe.
Determine the frequency and wavelength of this mode.
c. What is the frequency and harmonic number of the next observed resonance
(standing wave) in the organ pipe?
d. How long would a pipe that is open on both ends need to be to have the same
fundamental frequency as the one end open pipe?
e. Sketch the wave pattern of nodes and anti-nodes of the fourth harmonic in the
open-open pipe. Determine the frequency and wavelength of this mode.
5. [2] A light ray strikes two mirrors that have a 75.0? angle between them. The angle
between the incoming ray and the first mirror is 55.0?. Find the angle ? between the
incoming and outgoing rays. Show work, add the numerical values for the unknown
angles to the diagram.
6. [3] A beam of white light enters an equilateral triangular glass prism at an angle of
incidence of 45.0?. The glass has an index of refraction for violet light (410 nm) of 1.530,
and an index of refraction for red light (660 nm) of 1.512.
Relative to the normal on the right-hand side of the
prism, what are the refracted angles for the violet
and red rays as the exit the prism? Keep 3 decimals
on angles, until final answer.
7. [7] A ray of light refracts from air (n1 = 1.00) into glass (n2 = 1.50) and then refracts
from the glass into water (n3 = 1.33). The angle of incidence from air is ?1 = 35.0?.
a. Find the speed of the light ray in the three different media.
b. The wavelength in air is 470 nm. What is the frequency of the light ray in the three
different media? In which media, will the light have the longest wavelength? ? the
shortest?
c. Find the angle of refraction of the ray as it goes from air into glass.
d. Find the angle of refraction of the ray as it goes from glass into water.
e. For a ray travelling from air to glass to water, there is one interface that total
internal reflection is possible. Identify the interface and find the critical angle. What
is the significance of this angle?
